What are tarot card keywords and how do you use them?

Keywords are compressed meanings — one or two words that capture a card's essential energy. Every card has a set of upright keywords and (if you use reversals) reversed keywords. They're training wheels, memory aids, and quick-reference anchors rolled into one.

Examples

  • The Magician — Manifestation, willpower, skill, resourcefulness
  • Two of Networks (Cups) — Partnership, mutual attraction, connection, harmony
  • Eight of Vectors (Pentacles) — Craftsmanship, mastery, dedication, detail work
  • Knight of Signals (Wands) — Adventure, energy, impulsiveness, passion in motion

How to Use Them

Keywords are your starting point, not your destination. When a card appears in a reading:

  1. Recall the keywords
  2. Filter them through the spread position (a keyword like "conflict" hits differently in a "past" vs. "future" position)
  3. Modify by surrounding cards (The Sun next to the Three of Codes transforms "heartbreak" into "healing from heartbreak")
  4. Apply to the specific question

Over time, you'll move beyond keywords into intuitive reading — the card's imagery and your gut reaction become the primary input. But keywords remain useful as anchors, especially in complex spreads where you need to quickly orient 10+ cards. Every card in Chaos Tarot includes keywords visible on hover.
