Court cards are the 16 personality cards of the Minor Arcana — four per suit (Page, Knight, Queen, King). They're the most challenging cards for beginners because they can represent people, personality traits, or modes of behavior depending on context.
The Court Hierarchy
- Pages — The student, the beginner, the message-bearer. Pages represent new energy emerging, curiosity, the start of learning something. They can indicate young people or childlike qualities in anyone.
- Knights — The actor, the quester, the extremist. Knights are all movement and no moderation. They represent action, pursuit, and the energy of going after something — sometimes recklessly.
- Queens — The nurturer, the integrator, the inner master. Queens have internalized their suit's element and express it with depth and maturity. They represent emotional intelligence, creation, and holding space.
- Kings — The authority, the external master, the decision-maker. Kings wield their suit's element in the world — through leadership, strategy, and structured application.
How to Read Them
Ask: is this card a person in the querent's life, an aspect of the querent, or an energy to embody? The Knight of Codes (Swords) could be a sharp-tongued person causing conflict, the querent's own tendency to act impulsively on ideas, or advice to move quickly and decisively. Context and position in the spread determine which interpretation applies.
