Hexagram Meaning

The Oracle Speaks

Water over wood — the well that serves all without discrimination. The town may be changed, but the well cannot be changed. It neither decreases nor increases. They come and go and draw from the well. If the rope does not go all the way to the water, or the bucket breaks, misfortune. The fundamental infrastructure that serves everyone. The database, the API, the shared resource that must be maintained.

The Six Lines — Changing Line Oracles

When a line is “changing” (old yin or old yang), its oracle activates. These texts reveal the specific mutation occurring at that position in the hexagram.

Line 1 (Yin — broken) — Bottom

The mud of the well is not drunk. No animals come to an old well. The abandoned codebase — no one uses deprecated infrastructure.

Line 2 (Yang — solid)

At the well hole, one shoots fishes. The jug is broken and leaks. Using the well for wrong purposes degrades it for everyone.

Line 3 (Yang — solid)

The well is cleaned, but no one drinks from it. This is my heart's sorrow. If the king were clear-minded, good fortune might be shared. Improved infrastructure that no one adopts.

Line 4 (Yin — broken)

The well is being lined. No blame. Maintenance and reinforcement of the foundation.

Line 5 (Yang — solid)

In the well there is a clear, cold spring from which one can drink. The clean, reliable source — well-maintained and accessible.

Line 6 (Yin — broken) — Top

One draws from the well without hindrance. It is dependable. Supreme good fortune. Perfect uptime. The service that never fails.
