Can tarot readings be wrong?

Tarot readings can be misinterpreted. The cards themselves aren't wrong or right — they're symbols. The interpretation is where accuracy lives or dies.

Common Sources of "Wrong" Readings

  • Wishful interpretation — Reading what you want to see rather than what the cards show. The Five of Codes (Swords) in a relationship question is rarely good news, but a hopeful reader might soften it into "healthy communication."
  • Wrong question — A vague question produces a vague reading. "What about my love life?" covers so much ground that almost any card can seem to fit.
  • Literalism — Taking card imagery too literally. Death doesn't mean death. The Ten of Codes doesn't mean ten swords in your back. Symbols require symbolic reading.
  • Confirmation after the fact — Retrofitting events to match a reading. This creates the illusion of accuracy without any real predictive or diagnostic power.

Improving Accuracy

Ask specific questions. Read what the cards say, not what you want them to say. Keep a journal and check your interpretations against reality. Over time, your accuracy improves because your pattern recognition sharpens. The tarot isn't getting better — you are.
